Research

Not Just Other People’s…
…NDPA has an in-house research project!

We continue to focus on other peoples’ research work, but we can now give you a definitive update on research activities where we are involved.

A doctorate in Education Research at Brunel University has been completed by Barry Twigg, a former Senior Youth & Community Education Officer with the London Borough of Hillingdon and former co-ordinator of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for the same borough. During his time with Hillingdon Barry was on the Management Committee for the Borough’s drug agency at Fountains Mill; a project founded by NDPA consultant, Ann Stoker.

The great news is that Barry has been awarded his doctorate (the equivalent in the Education field of a Ph.D.). We register our admiration for his achievement.

In the near future we plan to publish (with Barry’s permission) the essence of this important research, which highlighted the fact that most drugs research focuses on people who use drugs and asks “why?”. We wanted to focus on those who don’t use drugs and ask “Why not?”. The hope is that this work will strengthen primary prevention approaches and to make a much needed contribution to the body of prevention research.

More credit – this time for our Youth Director!

One major task that Neil Scott, our Youth Director, undertook was a Masters degree. His chosen topic was Drug Education, with a special focus on Education Resources available to schools in England. Neil’s work has been recognised by the award of Masters degree. Neil had to complete is tough study task at the same time as sustaining his duties as a Primary school teacher in Derby. We heartily congratulate Neil for this considerable achievement, and we hope that in due course and with his permission we will be able to share with you the main points of his research.

‘The Prevention Works’ – Research Digests

The Prevention Works is a newsletter produced by the NDPA for interested parties. This section of the site provides the latest of these, as well as an archive of past issues.

We have divided this section into different volumes. Because there are so many volumes to read through we thought it would be easier to divide them according to the topic. If you wish to see “The Prevention Works” by topic, you can click on the following links.
