{"id":1013,"date":"2009-01-23T16:36:11","date_gmt":"2009-01-23T15:36:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/?p=1013"},"modified":"2010-06-11T13:53:55","modified_gmt":"2010-06-11T13:53:55","slug":"hivaids-epidemiology-hiv-rates-risk-factors-among-different-idu-types-determined","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/2009\/01\/hivaids-epidemiology-hiv-rates-risk-factors-among-different-idu-types-determined\/","title":{"rendered":"HIV\/AIDS EPIDEMIOLOGY: HIV rates, risk factors among different IDU types determined"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Patterns of HIV transmission among different classes of injection drug users have been characterized.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent study from the United States, the &#8220;prevalence of HIV and associated risk behaviors were assessed among three groups of heroin users: long term injection drug users (LTIDUs), new injection drug users (NIDUs), and heroin sniffers (HSs) with no history of injection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;HIV seroprevalence was similar among NIDUs (13.3%) and HSs (12.7%),&#8221; while &#8220;LTIDUs had almost twice as high a level of HIV infection (24.7%),&#8221; reported D.D. Chitwood and coauthors at the University of Miami. &#8220;After including drug use and sex behavior variables in logistic regression models, both drug and sexual risk factors remained in the models.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Attributable risk percent (APR) from injection for HIV infection among injection drug users was estimated to be 55.7% for LTIDUs and 5.8% for NIDUs,&#8221; published data indicated. &#8220;High-risk sex behavior plays an important role in the prevalence of HIV among drug users and accounts for nearly all the infection among NIDUs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Both injection and sexual risk behaviors need to be stressed in HIV prevention and intervention programs aimed at drug users,&#8221; the researchers concluded.<\/p>\n<p>Chitwood and colleagues published their study in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs (Prevalence and risk factors for HIV among sniffers, short-term injectors, and long-term injectors of heroin.
