{"id":1480,"date":"2009-07-17T16:31:17","date_gmt":"2009-07-17T15:31:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/?p=1480"},"modified":"2009-07-17T16:31:17","modified_gmt":"2009-07-17T15:31:17","slug":"british-study-links-cannabis-to-psychosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/2009\/07\/british-study-links-cannabis-to-psychosis\/","title":{"rendered":"British study links cannabis to psychosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">A British team researching psychotic symptoms, such as paranoia and hallucination, has found that there is a relatively strong link between cannabis consumption and psychosis in a recent report.According to the study conducted at King&#8217;s College Hospital in London, more than one in 20 people in Britain have experienced psychotic symptoms such as paranoid thoughts or hallucinations. <\/span><br style=\"font-family: verdana;\" \/><br style=\"font-family: verdana;\" \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">The study of 8,580 people found that 5.5 percent had experienced one or more of the five psychotic symptoms measured, including feeling their thoughts were being interfered with or suffering strange experiences. Psychotic symptoms were linked to drug and alcohol dependence, recent stressful life events and lower intellectual ability. In terms of drug dependence, the relationship between cannabis and psychotic symptoms was the strongest. <\/span><br style=\"font-family: verdana;\" \/><br style=\"font-family: verdana;\" \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Louise Johns from the Institute of Psychiatry said: &#8220;We looked at factors associated with these symptoms and it was cannabis dependence that was most linked to psychosis.&#8221;What we don&#8217;t know is the direction &#8211; whether cannabis dependence leads to psychosis or psychotic symptoms lead to cannabis use,&#8221; she said. <\/span><br style=\"font-family: verdana;\" \/><br style=\"font-family: verdana;\" \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\">Although psychosis is generally thought of as an &#8220;all-or-nothing&#8221; phenomenon,the researchers said there was increasing evidence that it exists in the population as a continuum rather than as a categorical diagnosis.This meant that most people who reported one or more psychotic symptoms were not clinically mentally ill, they said. <\/span><br style=\"font-family: verdana;\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: right; font-style: italic;\"><small><span style=\"font-family: verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">Source: British Journal of Psychiatry.
