Overlooked is the fact that polysubstance use is nearly ubiquitous among overdose deaths, demonstrating that the opioid overdose death problem is bigger than opioids. The foundation of the nation\u2019s opioid overdose crisis \u2013 and the totality of the nation\u2019s drug epidemic \u2013 is widespread recreational pharmacology, the use of drugs for fun or \u201cself-medication.\u201d The national focus on opioid overdose deaths provides important new opportunities in both prevention and treatment to make fundamental changes to the way that\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" title=\"Learn more about Physical Dependence\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/neuroscience\/physical-dependence\">substance use disorders<\/a>\u00a0and related problems are understood and managed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"spar0010\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">The first-ever US Surgeon General\u2019s report on addiction provides a starting point for systemic changes in the nation\u2019s approach to preventing, treating and managing substance use disorders as serious, chronic diseases. New prevention efforts need to encourage youth to grow to adulthood not using alcohol,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" title=\"Learn more about Nicotine\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/neuroscience\/nicotine\">nicotine<\/a>, marijuana or other drugs for reasons of health.
