daily<\/a>\u00a0for years may raise the overall risk of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/types\/head-and-neck\/head-neck-fact-sheet#what-are-cancers-of-the-head-and-neck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">head and neck cancers<\/a>\u00a0three- to five-fold, according to a new study that analyzed millions of medical records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2s00043b6kj92oi3ju@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">\u201cOur research shows that people who use cannabis, particularly those with a cannabis use disorder, are significantly more likely to develop head and neck cancers compared to those who do not use cannabis,\u201d said senior study author Dr. Niels Kokot, a professor of clinical otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"related-content_full-width related-content_full-width--article\" when a person has two or more of such symptoms as craving weed, becoming tolerant to its effects, using more than intended, using marijuana even though it causes problems in life, using it in high-risk situations, experiencing withdrawal and being unable to quit, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cannabis\/health-effects\/cannabis-use-disorder.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/marijuana\/health-effects\/addiction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2s00063b6ktaxiz7ne@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">\u201cWhile our study did not differentiate between methods of cannabis consumption, cannabis is most commonly consumed by smoking,\u201d Kokot said in an email. \u201cThe association we found likely pertains mainly to smoked cannabis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2s00073b6kt1jw13mz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">Some 69% of people with a diagnosis of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seer.cancer.gov\/statfacts\/html\/oralcav.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oral or throat cancer<\/a>\u00a0will\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seer.cancer.gov\/statfacts\/html\/oralcav.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survive five years or longer\u00a0<\/a>after their diagnosis, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seer.cancer.gov\/statfacts\/html\/oralcav.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Cancer Institute.<\/a>\u00a0If the cancer metastasizes, however, that rate drops to 14%. About 61% of people diagnosed with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seer.cancer.gov\/statfacts\/html\/laryn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cancer of the\u00a0larynx<\/a>\u00a0will be alive five years later \u2014 a rate that drops to 16% if the cancer spreads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2s00083b6k12dqbja2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">The study used insurance data to look at the association of cannabis use disorder with head and neck cancers, said Dr. Joseph Califano, the Iris and Matthew Strauss Chancellor\u2019s Endowed Chair in Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Diego. Other risk factors include poor oral hygiene;gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD; a weakened immune system; and a diet low in fruits and vegetables. Researchers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK559285\/#:~:text=Epstein%20Barr%20virus%20(EBV)%20is,rare%2C%20but%20important%20to%20recognize.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimate<\/a>\u00a0that 90% of the world\u2019s population is infected with EBV.\u00a0 A vaccine is available for HPV, which is linked to a high risk of developing cervical cancer and some non-Hodgkin lymphomas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2t000h3b6kch2xzjwb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">It\u2019s possible to be infected with both viruses at once, and that combination is responsible for 38% of all virus-associated cancers,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4724123\/#:~:text=Two%20DNA%20viruses%2C%20Epstein%2DBarr,types%20of%20viruses%20is%20increasing.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-might-cannabis-cause-cancers\" class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/clzklpg2t000i3b6kxg25uxm5@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">How might cannabis cause cancers?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2t000j3b6ke8l24apj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">The study, published Thursday in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaotolaryngology\/fullarticle\/10.1001\/jamaoto.2024.2419?guestAccessKey=6cb564cb-8718-452a-885f-f59caecbf92f&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=080824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JAMA Otolaryngology\u2013Head &amp; Neck Surgery<\/a><em>, a<\/em>nalyzed a database of 4 million electronic health records and found more than 116,000 diagnoses of cannabis use disorder among people with head and neck cancers. Those men and women, whose average age was 46, were then matched with people who also had head and neck cancers but were not diagnosed with cannabis use disorder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2t000k3b6kvb75b23g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\"><em>T<\/em>he analysis showed that people with cannabis use disorder were about 2.5 times more likely to develop an oral cancer; nearly five times more likely to develop oropharyngeal cancer, which is cancer of the soft palate, tonsils and back of the throat; and over eight times more likely to develop cancer of the larynx. Smoking tobacco <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaotolaryngology\/fullarticle\/2802783#:~:text=Using%20tobacco%20is%20the%20biggest,alcohol%20also%20increases%20the%20risk.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doubles the risk<\/a>\u00a0of developing head and neck\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennmedicine.org\/cancer\/types-of-cancer\/squamous-cell-carcinoma\/types-of-squamous-cell-carcinoma\/squamous-cell-carcinoma-of-the-head-and-neck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">squamous cell carcinoma<\/a>, which makes up 90% of all head and neck cancers.\u00a0 Heavier tobacco use leads to even higher risk, and when alcohol is added, the risk is even greater.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2t000m3b6kbykdr94u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">Due to the way marijuana is smoked \u2014 unfiltered and breathed in deeply and held in the lungs and throat for a few seconds \u2014 the risk from cannabis smoke\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2277494\/#:~:text=Cannabis%20smoking%20also%20has%20the,of%20the%20carcinogenic%20polyaromatic%20hydrocarbons.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could be even greater,<\/a>\u00a0experts say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2t000n3b6k2qjqqqy1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">Another key to the puzzle of how cannabis causes cancer: Research has found a link between various cannabinoids and tumor growth. There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/cannabis-marijuana-and-cannabinoids-what-you-need-to-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 100 cannabinoids<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 biological compounds in the cannabis plant that bind to cannabinoid receptors in the human body, according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. All told, there are about 540 chemicals in each marijuana plant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzklpg2t000o3b6k7mpuqisr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"on\">Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is the substance that makes one euphoric, while\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/07\/29\/health\/weed-addiction-cbd-wellness\/index.html\">cannabidiol, or CBD<\/a>, has been shown to have medicinal uses for childhood\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2017\/05\/24\/health\/cannabidiol-epilepsy-study\/index.html#:~:text=Cannabidiol%20slashes%20seizures%20in%20kids%20with%20rare%20epilepsy%2C%20study%20finds,-By%20Susan%20Scutti&amp;text=Between%20its%20outlaw%20image%2C%20controversial,in%20many%20ways%20a%20mystery.\">seizures
