{"id":18085,"date":"2024-10-12T18:54:08","date_gmt":"2024-10-12T17:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/?p=18085"},"modified":"2024-11-26T20:18:58","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T19:18:58","slug":"north-charleston-hosts-first-overdose-awareness-day-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/2024\/10\/north-charleston-hosts-first-overdose-awareness-day-event\/","title":{"rendered":"North Charleston hosts first Overdose Awareness Day event"},"content":{"rendered":"<section class=\"header | w-100\">\n<div class=\"article-header article row mb-3\">\n<div class=\"lead-art | col-12\" style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<h4 class=\"media-item | figure video | media-item-video pb-3 w-100\" data-video-asset=\"81bc5e56-be61-4bf2-a16b-e06c1bd7c830\"><span class=\"\">By <\/span><span class=\"author |\"><a class=\"text-decoration-none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.live5news.com\/authors\/caroline-spikes\/\">Caroline Spikes<\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"date-time | col-12\"><span class=\"date-time published-date-time font-italic d-inline-block\">Published: Sep. 1, 2024<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"sharebar | col-12\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"body | w-100\">\n<div class=\"article-body | article w-100\">\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Aug. 31 is known as International Awareness Day the department wanted to spread awareness about the crisis of drug overdoses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">During this event, people gathered at the city hall and lit candles to remember lost lives or loved ones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The South Carolina Department of Alcohol and other Drug Abuse Services states the number of overdoses has been increasing for the past 10 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Organizations and community members came together to learn more about how to spot an overdose and the importance of Narcan nasal sprays.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Thomas Young, a Charleston County support specialist, said his overdose was a wake-up call to get the help he needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI was basically dead on arrival and it took six Narcan to get me awake,\u201d Young said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">There have been between 100-120 incidents regarding overdoses with 20 of those fatal within the first six months of this year according to the North Charleston Police Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">In 2022 alone, there were 437 opioid-related deaths in the Lowcountry and over 1,800 throughout the whole state, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Opioid prevention coordinator Shelbey Joffrion said she thinks substance abuse disorder is important for people to know and how it touches to have someone by them during difficult times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI just think it\u2019s important that everyone knows the substance abuse disorder touches everyone,\u201d Joffrion said. \u201cI have not met anyone who says they have not had their friend or family in their circle. It touches all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Young explains he never thought it be sober ever again and how it takes a team to overcome a drug addiction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cI never I never thought I\u2019d be sober, ever,\u201d Young said. \u201cIt\u2019s basically a miracle that I\u2019m sober because I was a glorified drug user for many years. Nobody can really get clean by themselves, no matter how much they try.
