To understand how to contribute to the prevention of substance use disorders, all individuals need to know two important facts:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Substance use disorders are diseases.<\/strong>\u00a0They are progressive, chronic, and fatal. They are classified as\u00a0<em>primary<\/em>\u00a0diseases, meaning they are caused by something else, such as an emotional problem or poor choices. Substance use disorders are medical conditions of the brain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Substance use disorders are treatable.\u00a0<\/strong>Just as heart disease or diabetes can be treated, so can substance use disorders. In addition to medication, effective treatments usually involve therapy and connecting to community support.<\/p>\n<p>Sharing these facts helps\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/humanservices.arkansas.gov\/divisions-shared-services\/shared-services\/office-of-substance-abuse-and-mental-health\/get-involved\/\">remove stigma<\/a>\u00a0around substance use and makes people more comfortable talking about it. This opens up opportunities to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increase collaboration among state agencies, community organizations, and special populations<\/li>\n<li>Develop culturally appropriate strategies and implement plans to reduce risks and increase protective factors across the state and in specific communities<\/li>\n<li>Expand citizen participation in community activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The most promising way to reduce alcohol and drug problems is to use a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to prevention. There are evidence-based tools that organizations and communities can use to guide these efforts. For example, organizations that adopt a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/humanservices.arkansas.gov\/divisions-shared-services\/shared-services\/office-of-substance-abuse-and-mental-health\/prevention-frameworks\/\">Strategic Prevention Framework<\/a>\u00a0and develop\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/humanservices.arkansas.gov\/divisions-shared-services\/shared-services\/office-of-substance-abuse-and-mental-health\/prevention-frameworks\/#logic\">logic models<\/a>\u00a0are more likely to achieve positive outcomes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experts Dedicated to Building Healthy Communities<\/h2>\n<p>The RAAD campaign is coordinated by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/humanservices.arkansas.gov\/divisions-shared-services\/aging-adult-behavioral-health-services\/about-daabhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DAABHS<\/a>\u00a0(rhymes with \u201cabs\u201d). That\u2019s our abbreviated way of saying the Arkansas Department of Human Services Division of Aging, Adult and Behavioral Health Services the Substance Abuse Prevention team.<\/p>\n<p>The DAABHS team is passionate about uniting individuals and communities in prevention efforts.
