And more than 1 in 10 said they had been harmed by a loved one\u2019s drug use.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s close to 160 million victims \u2014 113 million hurt by loved one\u2019s drinking and 46 million by their drug use, according to the survey published recently in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phi.org\/press\/new-study-alcohol-and-drug-use-cause-significant-harms-that-go-beyond-the-individual\/\">Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"carousel1 -mb:4\">\n<div class=\"carousel1-entries\" data-items=\"\">\n<div class=\"carousel1-entry\" data-item=\"\">\n<div class=\"quote1\">\n<blockquote class=\"quote1-main\"><p><q>There are more harms than people think&#8230; They affect families, relationships and communities.<\/q><cite><strong>William Kerr<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/cite>Scientific Director, Center Director &amp; Study Co-Author, Alcohol Research Group\u2019s National Alcohol Research Center, Public Health Institute<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"-xw:3 -mx:a -mb:4\">\n<div class=\"-xw:4\">\n<p>He said it makes sense that risky drinking and drug use have far-reaching consequences, but researchers only began looking at the secondhand harms of alcohol in recent years. Less has been known about the damage done by a loved one\u2019s drug use.<\/p>\n<p>The new study is based on a survey of 7,800 U.S. adults. They were questioned between September 2019 and April 2020, before the pandemic became a factor in Americans\u2019 substance use.<\/p>\n<p>People were asked if they had been harmed in any of several ways due to someone else\u2019s substance use.<\/p>\n<p>In all, 34% of respondents said they had suffered secondhand harm from someone else\u2019s alcohol use. The harms ranged from marriage and family problems to financial fallout, assault and injury in a drunken-driving accident.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, 14% of respondents said they\u2019d suffered similar consequences from a loved one\u2019s drug abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The two groups overlapped, too \u2014 30% of respondents reporting secondhand harm from alcohol also said they were affected by someone\u2019s drug use.<\/p>\n<p>Kerr said in a journal news release that the differences probably owe to the fact that drinking and alcohol use disorders are more common than drug use and disorders.
