{"id":18579,"date":"2025-01-18T18:10:02","date_gmt":"2025-01-18T17:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/?p=18579"},"modified":"2025-05-20T19:04:03","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T18:04:03","slug":"advice-sought-on-upgrading-ketamine-to-class-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/2025\/01\/advice-sought-on-upgrading-ketamine-to-class-a\/","title":{"rendered":"Advice sought on upgrading ketamine to Class A"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"ssrcss-bwbna7-ComponentWrapper-HeadlineComponentWrapper egtrm1f0\" data-component=\"headline-block\"><\/header>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1qlkdz0-ComponentWrapper-FullWidthWrapper ey0461q0\" data-component=\"image-block\">\n<figure class=\"ssrcss-1vfya96-StyledFigure e34k3c22\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-ab5fd8-StyledFigureContainer e34k3c21\">Maia Davies, BBC News, Published 7 January 2025<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\"><b class=\"ssrcss-1xjjfut-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">Ketamine could be upgraded to a Class A drug as the government seeks expert advice on its classification, the Home Office has said.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Illegal use of the drug has reached record levels in recent years, with an estimated 269,000 people aged 16-59 reporting ketamine use in the year ending March 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Increasing ketamine&#8217;s classification would bring it in line with drugs including cocaine, heroin and ecstasy (MDMA) and mean up to life in prison for supply and production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">The policing minister will ask the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs whether its classification should be changed and &#8220;carefully consider&#8221; its findings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ketamine can cause serious health problems including irreversible damage to the bladder and kidneys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">It is also one of the most detected drugs in incidents of spiking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">While commonly used on animals and in healthcare settings, ketamine is also thought of as a party drug due to its hallucinogenic effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">An estimated 299,000 people aged 16-59 reported ketamine use in the year ending March 2023 &#8211; the highest on record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Ketamine was\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-26151459\">upgraded from a Class C substance<\/a>\u00a0in 2014 due to mounting evidence over its physical and psychological dangers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Currently, the maximum penalty for producing and supplying ketamine is up to 14 years in prison. Possession can carry up to five years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Should it be upgraded to a Class A drug,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/penalties-drug-possession-dealing\">supply and production of it could carry up to life in prison,<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">,\u00a0external<\/span><\/a> while possession could carry up to seven years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">A coroner&#8217;s prevention of future deaths report called for action over the drug&#8217;s classification, after a man died from sepsis caused by a kidney infection that was\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c9wrv0g5vwqo\">&#8220;a complication of long-term use of ketamine&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Greater Manchester South senior coroner Alison Mutch noted that James Boland, 38, started taking the drug as he believed it to be &#8220;less harmful&#8221; than Class A drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">She\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-f6h2dj-InlineLink e1kn3p7n0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.uk\/prevention-of-future-death-reports\/james-boland-prevention-of-future-deaths-report\/\">wrote\u00a0<span class=\"visually-hidden ssrcss-1f39n02-VisuallyHidden e16en2lz0\">,\u00a0external<\/span><\/a>in November: &#8220;Maintaining its classification as a Class B drug was likely to encourage others to start to use it or continue to use it under the false impression it is &#8220;safer&#8221;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">Policing minister Dame Diana Johnson has pledged to &#8220;work across health, policing and wider public services to drive down drug use and stop those who profit from its supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph e1jhz7w10\">&#8220;It is vital we are responding to all the latest evidence and advice to ensure people&#8217;s safety and we will carefully consider the ACMD&#8217;s recommendations before making any decision.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1qmkvfu-TopicListWrapper etw6iwl1\" data-component=\"topic-list\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-113c0cq-StyledTagContainer ed0g1kj1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-50vlbt-TopicListHeaderWrapper etw6iwl0\">\n<h2 class=\"ssrcss-ad2rmd-Heading e10rt3ze0\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Source: https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp8306prgy6o<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Maia Davies, BBC News, Published 7 January 2025 Ketamine could be upgraded to a Class A drug as the government seeks expert advice on its classification, the Home Office has said.
