It also weakens the immune system, making people more vulnerable to infectious diseases, such as\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/erj.ersjournals.com\/content\/39\/1\/149\">pneumonia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5540679\/\">tuberculosis<\/a>. Taken in excess, it can kill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">Given these significant health consequences, it\u2019s not surprising that many people who are addicted to the substance, try to quit. However, if it\u2019s not done\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27864953\">properly<\/a>, withdrawal from alcohol can have terrible health consequences of its own, including death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">The body adapts to long-term change in order to survive. An example of this is angina, where the vessels supplying the heart with blood become narrow. Evidence suggests that people with the condition can slowly\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/heart.bmj.com\/content\/100\/2\/106?100%2F2%2F106\">improve<\/a>\u00a0and adapt to the reduced blood flow by developing new blood vessels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">Similarly, there are physiological changes as a result of long-term alcohol abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">Alcohol\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/aa77\/aa77.htm\">suppresses<\/a>\u00a0the production of certain neurotransmitters (chemicals that carry messages between nerve cells). After a while, the body adjust to the continual presence of high amounts of alcohol by producing more of these neurotransmitters and their\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/jnnp.bmj.com\/content\/jnnp\/75\/suppl_3\/iii16.full.pdf\">receptors<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the proteins on the surface of nerve cells that neurotransmitters latch on to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">When people who are dependent on alcohol suddenly quit drinking, there is a surge in neurotransmitters, way above what the body needs. This complicated biological process is due to the fact that alcohol interferes with the balance of GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter) and glutamate (an excitatory neurotransmitter).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">The excitatory and inhibitory pathways in the brain control the central nervous system and heart. Once alcohol is removed, the huge levels of neurotransmitters that are present can overstimulate organs, including the heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">This is often made worse by the fact that the heart\u2019s structure changes with long-term alcohol use. Muscle strength and thickness, for example, are significantly reduced in people who consume more than 90g of alcohol per day (one unit of alcohol is equal to 8g of pure alcohol) over a period of five years or\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinicproceedings.org\/article\/S0025-6196(13)01002-1\/pdf\">more<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">The sudden removal of alcohol can also cause\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ndt\/article\/18\/4\/840\/1836388\">kidney failure<\/a>. Alcohol has to be broken down and cleared from the body as urine. This needs water, as the products of the breakdown have to be in solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">Alcohol also inhibits the production of an anti-diuretic hormone, so large quantities of alcohol make you urinate a lot and become dehydrated. Electrolytes in the body, such as sodium, magnesium, calcium and potassium, are usually in solution (water) and excessive amounts of alcohol can cause an\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/arh21-1\/84.pdf\">imbalance<\/a>\u00a0in these electrolytes as well as an acid-base imbalance. These imbalances can eventually lead to acute kidney failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">Dangerous drug<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;font-size: 10pt;color: #0000ff\">The risk of dying from sudden alcohol withdrawal are very real and very high, with estimates ranging from\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/alcalc\/article\/45\/2\/151\/134927\">6%<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/arh22-1\/61-66.pdf\">25%<\/a>, depending on their symptoms.
