However, limited empirical work has examined how culturally specific protective factors \u2013 such as family disapproval and cultural affiliation \u2013 interact to influence substance use behavior. Given the importance of kinship networks and cultural continuity, understanding these dynamics is critical for informing culturally grounded prevention strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\"><i>Objectives:<\/i>\u00a0This study examines the moderating role of cultural affiliation in the association between family disapproval of substance use and actual use among American Indian adolescents, a population often excluded from national health datasets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\"><i>Methods:<\/i>\u00a0Secondary analysis was conducted using self-report data from the\u00a0<i>Our Youth, Our Future<\/i>\u00a0study, a nationally representative sample of American Indian adolescents attending schools on or near reservations (<i>N<\/i>\u2009=\u20098,950; 51% female; Mage\u2009=\u200914.64\u2009years, SD\u2009=\u20091.77).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\"><i>Results:<\/i>\u00a0Multilevel analyses revealed that family disapproval was negatively associated with lifetime alcohol (b\u2009=\u2009\u22120.15,\u00a0<i>p<\/i>\u2009&lt;\u2009.001) and cannabis use (b\u2009=\u2009\u22120.34,\u00a0<i>p<\/i>\u2009&lt;\u2009.001), controlling for age. Among adolescents who endorsed use, cultural affiliation moderated the relationship between family disapproval and past-year alcohol and cannabis use. Specifically, family disapproval was significantly associated with lower alcohol use at high (b\u2009=\u2009\u22120.01,\u00a0<i>p<\/i>\u2009=\u2009.002) but not low (b\u2009=\u2009\u22120.07,\u00a0<i>p<\/i>\u2009=\u2009.48) levels of cultural affiliation. For cannabis use, the association was stronger at high (b\u2009=\u2009\u22120.51,\u00a0<i>p<\/i>\u2009&lt;\u2009.001) versus low (b\u2009=\u2009\u22120.32,\u00a0<i>p<\/i>\u2009=\u2009.005) levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"last\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #0000ff;\"><i>Conclusions:<\/i>\u00a0Cultural affiliation strengthens the protective effects of family disapproval on substance use among American Indian youth.
