That would make sense.\u00a0After all, teen substance use excluding cannabis is\u00a0<em>DOWN<\/em>, compared to the 20.9% of high school juniors in 2002, the 8% figure of 2022 represents major improvement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #0000ff;\">Despite this, death rates are not improving.\u00a0In fact, teen overdose deaths\u00a0<em>doubled<\/em>\u00a0in the eight short months between August 2019 and March 2020.\u00a0As of 2022, 22 teens were dying\u00a0<em>WEEKLY<\/em>\u00a0from drug overdose in the United States.\u00a0And overdoses are now the third leading cause of death for the youth, after guns and cars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #0000ff;\">Fentanyl changed it all.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \"><\/aside>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #0000ff;\">Now, over 75% of teen overdose victims\u2019 lives are claimed by fentanyl.\u00a0There was nearly a\u00a0<em>300% INCREASE<\/em>\u00a0in fentanyl deaths aged 15-19 from 2018 to 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #0000ff;\">The problem isn\u2019t necessarily addiction. It\u2019s\u00a0<em>contamination.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #0000ff;\">84% of teen overdose deaths are\u00a0<em>unintentional<\/em>, and around\u00a0<em>a quarter<\/em>\u00a0of teen overdose deaths involve fake prescriptions.\u00a0Fatal drugs like fentanyl spread through adult markets due to their potency and make their way to teens by accident.\u00a0Most teens do not even get hooked onto the drugs that kill them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Treatment inequality and solutions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #0000ff;\">Teen treatment right now is almost a scandal.\u00a0While 42% of adults aged 45+ receive medications for opioid use disorder within three months of diagnosis, only 5% of teens do.\u00a0Out of every five teens with substance use disorder, only one gets treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-3    \"><\/aside>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #0000ff;\">Regardless of everything, prevention programs are still a solution.\u00a0Project Towards No Drug Abuse (Project TND) has shown a 25% reduction in hard drug use.\u00a0Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) reduces overdose deaths by 70-80%.\u00a0Endless life-saving rescues by naloxone have been documented by near-death survivors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; color: #0000ff;\">It is not that there are no solutions. Ironically, teens are the ones with the least access to drugs. We know what works, and Alameda County cares for its people.
