{"id":2116,"date":"2009-07-17T14:34:50","date_gmt":"2009-07-17T13:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/?p=2116"},"modified":"2009-07-17T14:34:50","modified_gmt":"2009-07-17T13:34:50","slug":"report-confirms-risk-of-early-marijuana-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/2009\/07\/report-confirms-risk-of-early-marijuana-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Report Confirms Risk of Early Marijuana Use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"color: #000099;\"><span>A new study confirms that marijuana use in early adolescence is related to multiple problems, including delinquency and other substance abuse in later adolescence.\u00a0 \u201cOur findings suggest that early marijuana use is correlated with later deviance beyond the effect of earlier similar behavior,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 said the authors of the study.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"color: #000099;\"><span>The study was based on interviews with about 1,200 inner-city young people five years after they responded to a questionnaire about drug use, attitudes towards drugs, behavior difficulties and family issues.\u00a0 The researchers found a significant increase in problem behaviors, such as violence, inability to function at work or school, risk-taking and dropping out of school, among adolescents who reported marijuana use at least once per month during the initial survey.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"color: #000099;\"><span>According to Brook, the link between early marijuana use and long-term substance abuse was highlighted \u201cby an almost four-fold increase in the likelihood of problems with cigarettes and a more than doubling of the odds of alcohol and marijuana problems.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"color: #000099;\"><span>Researchers recommended the creation of effective treatment strategies to help reduce current and future problems for early users of marijuana.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><em><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"color: #000099;\"><span>(Source: Dr. Judith Brook et al., Mount Sinai School of Med.
