Prior research has demonstrated that chronic marijuana<br \/>\nuse impacts endogenous hormone levels in the endocrine<br \/>\nand male reproductive systems. Researchers conducted<br \/>\na population-based case control trial to determine<br \/>\nwhether marijuana use is a risk factor for testicular cancer.<br \/>\nBetween 1999 and 2006, 369 cases of testicular cancer in<br \/>\nmen ages 18 to 44 years were identified from 3 counties in<br \/>\nWashington State. These men, along with 979 age-matched<br \/>\ncontrols, were surveyed about their lifetime marijuana use.<br \/>\nPotential confounders in analytic models included age, alcohol<br \/>\nuse, current smoking, and history of cryptorchidism.<br \/>\n\u2022 Patients with testicular cancer were 1.7 times more<br \/>\nlikely to be current marijuana smokers than controls.<br \/>\n\u2022 This association occurred most frequently in patients<br \/>\nwith nonseminomatous tumors, who were 2.3 times<br \/>\nmore likely to be current marijuana smokers than controls.<br \/>\n\u2022 Patients with nonseminomatous tumors were also<br \/>\nmore likely to have started using marijuana at an earlier<br \/>\nage (odds ratio [OR], 2.8), to have been using<br \/>\nmarijuana for 10 or more years (OR, 2.7), and to have<br \/>\na higher frequency of use (OR, 3.0).<br \/>\nComments: Marijuana use at an earlier age, for more years,<br \/>\nand with higher frequency is associated with nonseminomatous<br \/>\ntesticular cancer. Prospective studies controlling for<br \/>\nconfounders as well as basic scientific research to elucidate<br \/>\nthe potential biologic mechanisms behind this association<br \/>\nare needed to determine whether marijuana use causes<br \/>\nnonseminomatous testicular cancer.<br \/>\n<em>Source: .
