{"id":5141,"date":"2009-10-06T13:56:04","date_gmt":"2009-10-06T12:56:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/?p=5141"},"modified":"2009-10-12T15:00:22","modified_gmt":"2009-10-12T14:00:22","slug":"teens-aware-of-cannabis-harm-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/drugprevent.org.uk\/ppp\/2009\/10\/teens-aware-of-cannabis-harm-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Teens &#8216;aware of cannabis harm&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Nearly one in two teenagers knows someone who has suffered from a mental health problem like paranoia after using cannabis, a survey suggests.Forty-two percent of 11-18 year olds know someone who has experienced memory loss, panic attacks or paranoia from cannabis, drugs information service Frank said.<\/p>\n<p>The survey of 27,000 teenagers found 74% were aware of the risks.<\/p>\n<p>It revealed 18% of teenagers felt under pressure to try the Class B drug.<\/p>\n<p>One in ten thought it made them look cool.<\/p>\n<p>The research, which was carried out on networking website Habbo Hotel, found 64% of young people were aware cannabis could cause panic attacks, 41% knew it could bring on paranoia and 38% thought it could result in memory loss.<\/p>\n<p>Over 50% of teenagers associated cannabis use with losing motivation and doing badly at school or college.<\/p>\n<p>But one in four said they saw cannabis as a \u201cnatural\u201d drug, despite the risks.<\/p>\n<p>And 14% of 11-18 year olds admitted using the drug to help them to cope with life.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Hudson, from Frank, said: \u201cThe majority of teenagers (55%) don\u2019t want to risk their health by using cannabis, however, some people choose to take the risk; while others wrongly believe cannabis is harmless because it is a plant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCannabis messes with your mind &#8211; and reactions can be more powerful with stronger strains such as skunk, which is around twice as potent,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><em>Source: BBC Newsbeat 6th Aug.2009<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly one in two teenagers knows someone who has suffered from a mental health problem like paranoia after using cannabis, a survey suggests.Forty-two percent of 11-18 year olds know someone who has experienced memory loss, panic attacks or paranoia from cannabis, drugs information service Frank said.
