Researchers conducted<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">a \u201ccase-crossover\u201d study in 250 first-time nonfatal<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">acute myocardial infarction (AMI) cases to assess the influence<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">of alcohol consumption in the 12 hours preceding<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">AMI. Each case served as its own control; i.e., the control<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">information for each subject was based on his or her own<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">past behavior. The 12 hours preceding AMI was considered<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">the hazard period, while the corresponding time period a<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">week before AMI was the control period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">Drinking any alcohol in the hazard period increased<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">the risk for AMI threefold (odds ratio [OR], 3.1); even<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">moderate drinking (U24 g of ethanol for women and<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">U36 g for men) more than doubled it (OR, 2.3).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">Of the 187 subjects who drank any alcohol, 15 men<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">and 2 women reported heavy episodic drinking (4+<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">drinks per occasion for women and 5+ drinks for<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">men). The association between heavy episodic drinking<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">and AMI was not significant (OR, 3.0).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">These results were not influenced by known risk factors<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">for AMI (age, gender, smoking status, family history<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">of AMI, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">prior unstable angina pectoris, physical exertion<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">shortly before the event, psychological stress, or cocaine<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">use) in adjusted analyses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol;\"><span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">Compared with an age- and sex-matched general<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">population sample, subjects with AMI had more frequent<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">heavy episodic drinking (less than monthly, 21%<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">versus 11%; monthly or more, 7% versus 3%) and were<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">more likely to drink irregularly, i.e., less than weekly<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">(29% versus 16%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936A30t00;\">Comments<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936A30t00;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">Drinking any alcohol increased the risk for AMI in<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">the next 12 hours in this study. Researchers were not able<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">to demonstrate a significant association between heavy episodic<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">drinking and AMI due to the small number of exposed<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">subjects; however, the sample had higher rates of heavy and<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">irregular drinking compared with the general population,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">giving some support to the hypotheses that heavy drinking<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">increases AMI risk, and that pattern of drinking is important<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-bidi-font-family: TTFFFFF900C0936320t00;\">when assessing the risk for cardiovascular events.
